I cheated a bit on this map and added a bit of what was (in the 1700s) a part of Bertie “Precinct”. Today it is in Martin County. My main interest is in the area right around what is labeled on my map as Buzzard Point. The “Soil Map” below is valuable for the detail and place names… it is from 1918.

…I have had a fascination with this Indian Trader which I cannot explain… he was not a knuckle-dragging hayseed… he was complex.

Coll. Millikin seems to have had a plan that was rudely interrupted by his death… and, apparently, the Indian Trade was fairly lucrative…

This is way more information than a casual observer might want to know about the trials and tribulations of mapping these Colonial patents… it explains my tagline “meant what they said… said what they meant”… some stray ANDERSONS were on his land, hence my interest…

Here is his meager patent of 3,000 acres called Calledonia near the Morattock River and Canecara Swamp in modern Halifax County… it was known as ‘Chowan Precinct’ when Maule was stealing property.
