Andersons of Colonial N. Carolina

My main interest and curiosity about Andrew Ross is actually his son-in-law William Pitman. (the one who had property next to William Anderson in 1760 north of Tar River).  More specifically, I would like to figure out the father/ brothers of this William Pitman.

I thought this might help to solve the mysteries…

Deed references are broken into groups:  White Oak, Swift Creek, Stoney Creek and Sappony Swamp.

Wright MACKLEMORE had 140 acres of land patented to him on the south side of Poplar Swamp in Isle of Wight County (the southwestern part, later Southampton County), Virginia on August 1, 1734 (Patent Book 15, pg. 242). Since Wright was not among the known sons of James and Fortune, and therefore must have been one of, if not THE, oldest grandson. Hence his father had to have been James’ eldest son, William, as no one else could have been married by 1713, the latest date possible for Wright’s birth.

Wright is known to have had at least four sons (and possibly a fifth) and two daughters. After 1750, he and his sons Wright Jr., William, Moses, and Drewry (and according to Rudy H. Leverett, also a James), and two daughters Judeth, wife of William PITMAN, and ???, wife of James WIGGINS, are found in Edgecombe County on or near land devised to Wright’s father William Sr. by James, the original immigrant. Several of these family members moved southward into Duplin (later Sampson) County, North Carolina, in the 1770’s, where Wright’s son William is credited with founding a large family line. (James L. Ambrose Pittman died between 25 Mar 1786 and Feb 1787. His will is recorded in Halifax County, North Carolina [Will Book III p 122], as follows:

In the Name of God Amen. The 25th Day of March in the year of our Lord God Amen, One thousand seven & hundred & eighty six. I Ambrose Pittman of Halifax County in the State of North Carolina being through the abundance of the goodness and mercy of God though weak in body yet of sound & perfect mind and memory, do make and ordain this for and as my last will & testament in the manner & following form.

I give & recommend my soul to the hands of Almighty God that gave it & nothing doubting but that at the general Resurrection I shall receive the Same, and as touching such worldly Estate as it hath pleased Almighty to bless me, I give and dispose of the same in the manner and form following.

Imprim, I give & bequeath to daughter Lucy Haynes twenty shillings to her & her heirs & assigns.

State of North Carolina Halifax County: On the 19th day of November 1832 personally appeared in open Court before the Justices of the Court of pleas and quarter Sessions for the County aforesaid Arthur Pitman a resident of the County & State aforesaid aged eighty-three years who first being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832, That he

entered in the Army of the United States in the month of May 1781 in Halifax County North Carolina as a light horsemen commanded by Captain William Ellen in the Regiment commanded by Colonel John Branch and was employed until the close of the War in the Continental service in the State of North Carolina in taking and carrying to Joal [sic, jail] such as refused to serve in the Army; also in carrying provisions to the Army.  And at the battle of Guilford Court House I was with a drove of hogs to the American Army after which I continued to serve as first stated

until the close of the war when I with the rest of the privates was discharged.  Peace having been proclaimed in the Country after that we were not called on any more I then obtained a certificate for between seventy and eighty dollars assigned I think by Colonel Bradford (his given name I do not recollect) which certificate I sold to Barrell Smith for thirteen dollars before the funding law was passed by Congress the balance of my pay after the certificate were funded I have never received; after my discharge from the Army I settled in the County aforesaid where I have remained ever since.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to the pension or an annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension list (or roll) of any agency in any state.

The amended declaration of Arthur Pitman for a pension under the Act of Congress passed in the year 1832  7 June Arthur Pitman to whose declaration this is appended says that he served in the Revolutionary War 12 months or 4 tours of 3 months each as a private.  He does not recollect by whom it was signed — has lost his discharge — and has no proof (living) whereby to establish it.

State of North Carolina Burke County

Personally appeared in Open Court before the Justices of the County Court of Pleas and quarter Sessions now sitting Joseph Pitman a resident of said County & State aged 75 years, my Father had a record of my age which said I was born on the 10th day of September 1757 — I have no other knowledge of my age except this record.  Said Pittman being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed 7th of June 1832.

That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers & served as herein stated.  I was drafted for three months in the County of Granville North Carolina in the year 1779 or 80 in the fall the year under Colonel William Gill & Captain John Walker we marched from Granville to Wilmington on the Cape Fear River where we were stationed for three or four weeks: we then marched up to Cross Creek, (now Fayetteville) while at Wilmington we were

under General Butler — when we parted with him we marched up to Cross Creek.  From Cross Creek I was furloughed to come home where I remained about 2 weeks & was called out into service & marched on to High Rock on Haw River against the Tories.  We took several prisoners but killed none in battle.  I was discharged at that place by Colonel Gill he gave me a written discharge but it is lost I have not seen it for many years — sometime after I was again drafted for

3 months more & put under Colonel William Moore who lived in Caswell County & Captain Abram Potter we were marched on to reinforce General Gates but before we got to the South Carolina line we heard that he had got defeated & we turned our course towards Wilmington but before we got there we were turned to Pasquotank County after a band of Tories we drove them from that quarter & stationed there a few weeks & returned towards home — we were discharged

at the end of our service by Colonel Moore between Wilmington & Cross Creek from which place I returned home — some eight or nine months after this I was drafted again for 3 months & when out against the Tories down towards New Bern I was then under Colonel Joseph Taylor Captain [indecipherable name] we were out about 2 months but done no good & we were furloughed to return home we remained at home but a short time till we were called on to go & reinforce General Green [sic, Nathanael Greene].  We marched up as to Col. Mebane’s end Orange County & there heard of the battle of Guilford Court House.  I Colonel then returned

home & furloughed us all.  I was never called on afterwards. I was drafted once before I went into service myself & hired a substitute in consequence of the

situation of my family we were once also classed & out of every 12th man one had to go for 18 months.  My class hired a man & paid him $100 each in Continental money.  This is my services as well as I can recollect.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present & declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of any State or the Agency of any State.

State of North Carolina County of Buncombe

On this the 22nd day of May A.D. 1852 personally appeared before me, an acting Justice of the County Court (a Court of Record) for the County and State above mentioned: Dicy Pitman, a resident of Buncombe County; Aged, 81 years: who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath, make the following Declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July the 7th 1838, entitled, “An act granting half pay and pensions to certain Widows:” That she is the widow of Thomas Pitman deceased, who was a private in the Army of the Revolutionary war in the company commanded by Captain Alexander in the Regiment of North Carolina Militia commanded by Colonel Jackson, That he was a citizen of Edgecombe County in the State of North Carolina at the time he volunteered having been born and raised in said County.  She further says that the length of his first tower was 12 months and that he also served 2 other 6 months Towers one of which was as substitute

for his Brother, Joseph Pitman, who was a Cooper of the Army. The day of the month she does not recollect on which he volunteered, but she thinks that the said Thomas Pitman spoke of the year 1776 and 1777 as the times in which he served.  Declarant further states that she has heard said Thomas Pittman speak of being in several Battlegrounds during his service but she does not recollect any particular one.  Declarant also states that she has heard the above mentioned Thomas Pitman speak of being in South Carolina during his service but that the greater part of his time was spent near the State line but that his service began and ended in North Carolina.

The Declarant further states that she has heard the aforementioned Thomas Pitman speak of other Officers than those already mentioned but that the names of the above are all that she recollects, except that of Washington, but whether the said Thomas Pitman was under his immediate command, she is not certain.  She being old, and her memory much impaired; and that a great many facts wants none with relation to the service have since the death of said Thomas Pitman escaped her memory.  That said Thomas Pitman at the date of his death was over 60 years of age and that he, the best of her knowledge, had never made any effort to obtain a pension.  She further states that her husband at his death had several papers relative to his services in the war, one of those papers she thinks was his discharge, but that a man by the name of Sawyer sent to her and got the papers and that she has not heard of them since that time.

She further declares that she was married to the said Thomas Pitman in the County of Edgecombe, State of North Carolina on the 25th day of August A.D. 1793 and that her name before marriage was Dicy Newton, and that her husband, the aforementioned Thomas Pitman died on the 15th of March A.D. 1814: that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but that the Marriage actually took place before the first of January 1794, viz. at the date above mentioned.  She also declares that the Family record which is transmitted is true and correct.

Davidson on February 7, 1853 in Buncombe County,  Thomas and Dicy Pitman came to Buncombe County, NC in 1806 or 1807; that they had at that time 4 children, namely Elizabeth, Thomas, Polly and Lot; that two of those children are now dead; that Elizabeth, the eldest, is now about 56 years of age.]

ELIZABETH PITMAN (mark) of Edgecombe Co. to ARTHUR PITMAN of same, planter, for £10 current money of N.C. a tract of 90 acres on the north side of Tar River adjoining sherwood Haywood, it being a Granville grant to said Elizabeth Pitman dated March 24, 1749. wit: Sherrood Haywood, Hancock Hatcher (mark). 1761       1 Sep. ELIZABETH PITTMAN of Edgecombe Co. to JOSEPH PITTMAN of same, planter, for £10 Proc. money the 200 acre plantation whereon she then lived, it being part of a tract of land granted to said Elizabeth Pittman by Earl Granville on March 25, 1759. 1762       20 Sep. ARTHUR PITMAN of Edgecombe Co., planter to JOSEPH PITMAN of same, planter, for £20 Proc. money a tract of 100 acres on the north side of Tar River adjoining ELIZ. 1762       8 Dec. Henry (X) Watkins of Edgecombe Co. to Joseph Smith of same, for £25 Virginia money a tract of 165 acres on the north bank of Stoney Creek adjoining West, Smith, and Barns, it being a granville grant to James Oliver bearing date March 16, 1761 and conveyed to said Watkins by a deed of sale bearing date in March 1762. 1763       22 Sep. ANN PITMAN, widow, of Edgecombe Co. to JACOB PITTMAN of same, for £12 lawful money of NC all of her right and title in a lantation ont he south side of Tar River and on Buck Swamp, left to her for her lifetime by the will of her deceased husband, BENJAMIN PTTMAN. Elisha Battle of Edgecombe Co. lease to JESSE PITMAN and NEWIT PITMAN of same, for a period of twelve years a tract of land on the north bank of Tar River at the mouth of the Plum Tree Bottom adjoining THOS. PITMAN’S lease, the sum of 1/5/- Virginia currency to be paid annually on the first day of January. Wit: John Battle, THOMAS PITTMAN, JOEL PITTMAN. DB C, p. 243

1764       7 Mar. JACOB PITMAN of Edgecombe Co. to Samuel Longbottom of same, for £80 Proc. money a tract of 200 acres on the south bank of Tar River adjoining Record, “it being the land and plantation whereon my father, BENJA. PITMAN, lived and gave me by his last will and testament.” Wit: Edward Moore, Thomas Pridgin. DB C, p. 158.

1764       July Court. Elisha Battle lease to Michael Horn, for 12s. 6p annual rent a tract of 75 acres on the River. Said Horn was not to sublease the land during the twelve year term of the lease to any person except Battle, his heirs, or assigns. Part of tis deed is missing. 1765       18 Jan. William Gay and wife, Ann (X) Gay of Edgecome Co. to Elisha Battle of same, for £92 Virginia currency a tract of 225 acres on the south bank of Tar River adjoining JOSEPH PITMAN and said Battle, it being parts of two surveys (1) 150 acres granted to John Gay by patent bearing date Aapril 20, 1745; (2) 75 acres taken up and a deed granted to said William Gay bearing date Oct 15, 1761. Wit: Jesse Gilbert, Arthur (A) Gay, John Battle. Ann Gay was examined separately concerning her right of dower by Dempsey Grimes, Esq. DB c, p. 301.

1765       16 Jan. WILLIAM (X) PITMAN of Edgecombe Co. to JOHN PITMAN of same, £35 Virginia money a 166 acre plantation lying on both sides of Stoney Creek adjoining Andrew Ross and Jacob Barnes, it being a tract granted from Eal Granville to Andrew Ross by deed bearing date Feb 18, 1761 and by Andrew Ross given to said WILLIAM PITMAN in his last will and testament. Wit: John Ricks, Wm. Horn, John Moore. DB C, p. 322.

1765       2 Feb. Elisha Battle of Edgecombe Co., guardian to Jeremiah Hilliard, orphan of Jacob Hilliard a ten year lease of two plantations lying on both sides of Compass Creek: (1) the plantation called Hilliard’s old field at an annual rent of £4 yr. (2) the plantation whereon Wm Norris formerly lived at an annual rent of £. Wit: JOEL PITMAN, John Battle, Elisha Battle, Junr. DB C, p. 288.

1765       10 Jun. Jesse Blackwell (mark) of Edgecombe Co., planter to John Arliss Junr. of same, for £10 Proc. money a tract of land on the Mill Branch adjoining Arthur Dew and Hickman, it being part of a tract granted to said Jesse Blackwell bearing date 3 Nov 1761. Wit: JESSE PITMAN, Nath’l Hickman, senr. DB C, p. 369.

1769       20 Feb. Benjamin (B) Lane and wife, Mary, of Edgecome Co., planter , to Newit Lane of same, planter, £60 Proc money two tracts of land: (1) 100 acares on the north bank of Tar River a little above Green’s Path, it being part of a patent for 200 acres granted to Thomas Brown on 2 Mar 1744, conveyed by said Brown to JAMES PITMAN, conveyed by said Pitman to Nathaniel Bradford, and conveyed by said Bradford to said Benjamin Lane; (2) 35 acres adjining the aforesaid tract on the ban of Tar River at the mouth of Little Creek, it being part of another survey. 1769       24 Aug. Samuel Longbottom and wife, Mary Bottom, [sic] of Edgecombe Co. to NEWIT PITMAN, River adjoining Richards, it being part of a tract bequeathed by BENJA. PITMAN to his son, JACOB and conveyed by said JACOB PITMAN by deed to said Samuel Longbottom. Wit: Duncan Lamon, James Jolly, Archibald Lamon. DB D, p. 155.
