Robert Lang tidbit…
http://www.archive.org/stream/expansionofsouth00meriuoft#page/52/mode/2up
Robert Lang Sr & Jr noted in this map of Saxe Gotha, SC, ca. 1759… also Thomas Browne the SC Indian Trader surely prior to 1733… also I note “Raiford’s Creek” which may be the Philip Raiford of Isle of Wight and later Oconeechee Neck area of NC.
As far as I know no one has found a link between the Robert Lang of Oconeechee Neck , NC and this Lang of SC. This has him in SC as of 1737… assuming it is the same man.

Sims
One of the neighbors of James Anderson of Oconeechee Neck was Robert Sims. In his will(Robert Sims) is an obscured part from a fold (which I can’t read) which references ***horses. I think he was an Indian Trader…
1736
December 31-January 7, 1736
Williamsburg Gazette
By a Letter from Col. James Millikin, in North-Carolina, dated at Roanoak, December the 10th, we have the following Account, That he received a Letter from Mr. Thomas Brown, of the Cutaboes, the chief Trader there, informing him. That on the 9th of October last, Three Indians came to the House of one William Syms, on Pine tree Creek, and (in his Absence) killed his Wife, another Woman, Three Children, and a Negro Man; and then set Fire to the House, Tis suppos’d they carried a White Girl away with them alive, who liv’d at the House, but can’t be found.
They were followed the next Morning by Five White Men, upon the Track, who found they had stopp’d in the Night, near a Place called Mars-Bluff, on Pedee River, where they had shared the Plunder, and left the bloody Cloaths of the murdered People. The Indians bent their Way Northward, which makes it believ’d they were Tuskaroroes. Mr. Brown wrote the above Account to Col. Millikin, at the Request of the Governor of South-Carolina, desiring him to use his Endeavours to apprehend these horrid Murderers
On motion of Mr James Millikin in behalf of the Inhabitants of that part of Bertie Precinct that lyes on the South Side of Roanoke River that a bill for an Act to be preferred to this house for Establishing that part into a precinct by the name of Edgcombe also on the Motion of Mr Maurice Moore in behalf of the Inhabitants of Onslow and Bladen that a bill be preferred to confirm them into seperate precincts which Motions are granted. http://docsouth.unc.edu/csr/index.html/document/csr04-0052 1735
There were 3 different Sims that James Anderson sold property to (Robert, Henry & Joseph)… one of them was the father of this William Sims .
The Robert Sims will can be found here… http://mars.archives.ncdcr.gov (search “Robert Sims” for the online scan)
If you figure out where the Sims (brothers?) came from, let me know please.
Peter Anderson d.1801
A possible lead for his father is the mystery John Anderson of Halifax County who goes off the radar in mid 1730s…
A William Powell imported a John Anderson & Anne Huskey in 1711 in IOW or Nansemond. He may have simply purchased the headrights; but if they were actually servants and did their time he would have been in time and place to migrate to North Carolina.
2 Sep 1721 William Boon of Albermarle Co and Elizabeth Boon to Henry Sims of same, 15L, 200 a joining the Beaverdam Br, William Powell, William Brasswell and John Pace, now in the acutal possession of Henry Sims, part of a patent for 600 a granted to William Boon 11 Nov 1720. Wit Nicholas Boon, Joseph Boon, ack 5 Sep 1721 by John Bryan by virture of power of atty from William and Eliz Boon.
I’ve attempted to map Powell in IOW and have failed miserably so far… there are numerous Powells to wade through. Check my IOW map and toward the bottom is a patent for Robert Sims. The Robert Spring mentioned above is connected with some “Capps”… a Matthew Capps winds up living on the property of Robert Sims when he moves to Occoneechee Neck and buys land from James Anderson…
Just sayin’…

My take is that there are 3 families represented.
1 The single (widow?) Elizabeth, the James Anderson and the “town” William… my speculation is that they are older remnants (for lack of a better word) of an earlier family possibly of the “commisioner” James Anderson who appears to have died about 1763. Also note the 2 chain carriers (Arthur & James) of the 1752 survey of the below William Anderson.
2 The William Anderson who died 1789 (12 children) …noted in yellow.
3 The Henry Anderson who died 1801 & son Henry. (these folks lived south of Tarboro very near the Pitt County line)
And never missing an opportunity to push my theory… I think the “commissioner” James Anderson is the same man as the James of Occoneechee Neck who moved from there in about 1722 or so.
James Pitman 1740s…
From what I gather the general assumption is that he was the grandson of Benjamin and son of Moses Pitman…

I’ve previously identified some of his land being below the Anderson property near Swift Creek and adjacent the Elizabeth Pitman property. My current thought is that this is a non-issue in that he promptly sold the property shortly after acquiring it and probably never lived there.

Since he disappears from Edgecombe records, perhaps references to this James will show up in later Nash County resources (I don’t have any deed books or minutes)…
My point of this post is that I see no connection between this James Pitman and the widow Elizabeth Pitman of Swift Creek. Also it begs a question that James appears to acquire property 10 years before Benjamin (his supposed grandfather)… could it be that he is not the son of Moses?
(see the Edgecombe map under “Pages” to see the property I am referring to)
All of which leads to my main point which is that all of the information below is essentially correct:
From the research of Donald Gordon (a Pittman descendant):
Thomas Pitman,of Monmouthshire, England, fled England during the Cromwell rebellion and landed in Virginia in 1649. He purchased land in Surry County, Virginia and had two sons Thomas and William. This grandson, the third Thomas moved about 1707 to Isle of Wight County. His daughter Elizabeth and son Robert, with Robert’s two sons, Samuel and Joseph moved to Edgecombe County North Carolina about 1738. Deeds in Edgecombe County show Robert, Samuel, Joseph and Elizabeth holding several hundred acres in the area North and West of Tarboro. Joseph who first appears on Edgecombe records as a bailiff of the court had a son Abner (b. 1758) and grandson born 1787. By this time the Pitmans became Pittmans and all spelled their name with two tees . The Pittmans held land North of Leggett stretching into southern Halifax County. Here Joseph and his wife Mary had a son Henry Elias born 1828. In 1850 Henry married Lucy Anderson who in 1852 gave birth to Biscoe Pittman who married Martha Alice Walston. To this marriage was born, as the last of eight children, Hobson Lafayette Pittman (1899) at Epworth.
note:
Marc,
I checked the Pittman file at the Blount Bridgers house – The item you had was an exact quote from the paper by Donald Gordon who was a nephew of the artist Hobson Pittman. There is no other information about Elizabeth and Donald’s research was not documented. He came down through Abner and Joseph’s lines which he worked on. (Monika Fleming, Tarboro, NC)
I am attempting to prove that the Joseph Pitman who acquired the Elizabeth Pitman land was the son of Robert Pitman and also the man who signed the will of William Anderson in 1789.
further…
Notes from typescript notes in a file at Blount Bridgers House on Pittman family (compiled by great granddaughter Lena Pittman Weeks – 1949) McKajah Anderson the grandfather of Biscoe Pittman, the great grand father of Lena Pittman was a wealthy land owner – the number of acres cannot be numbered as writer does not have correct information. He made large sums of money by selling his huge cotton crops after holdings from “War between the States.” He was born on the old McKajah Anderson farm, now owned by the later Robert Pittman heirs. McKajah Anderson made his will in 1879 and is duly recorded in the Edgecombe County Court House Will Book G page 545. (per David Gammon)
A daughter of Micajah Anderson, Lucy Anderson, married Henry Pittman, the father of Biscoe Pittman.
Occoneechee Neck
This may not be precise but it is close…
William Little is shown on the 1733 Mosely map at this area.
Below I have transcribed the 1722 deed of James Anderson to John Gray. The point I wish to make is that James is moving south ( I theorize to what will become Tarboro). The term “Chowan Precinct” is just beginning to be used for this area of Occoneechee Neck and I think this deed with its use of the “County” designation strengthens my point. Another observation I have made is that Rivers are consistently described as north or south and almost never east or west (in deed descriptions). If he indeed is moving to Tarboro as I think, it was considered to be in Bath County.

(observations concerning Chowan Precinct)
There are, I think, no Quakers or any other dissenters in this parish: the people indeed are ignorant, there being few that can read, and fewer write, even of their justices of peace and vestrymen; yet to me they seemed very serious and well inclined, both in public and private, many of them being very ready to embrace (as far as they could) all opportunities of being instructed. The worst is, that the narrowness of their sense and conceptions occasions many differences and quarrels amongst themselves, for which no man can find any shadow of reason, but their ignorant mistakes of one another’s meaning, and upon this account I found these more frequent here than in any other country I have ever travelled….
Bath county contains most of that land which lies to the southward of Albemarle Sound to Pamplico River, and about thirty or forty miles more southerly to Neuse River, which (being but lately peopled with a few French who left Virginia) is not laid down in the draft…. In this as in all other parts of the province, there is no money; every one buys and pays with their commodities…
