2 John Pitmans of IOW
I say Isle of Wight but it is now modern Southampton County, VA. The early IOW and Surry Counties extended all the way to the NC border. Hence, any surviving records are found all over several county record books.
This first guy is undoubtedly the son of Thomas Pitman d 1730. He and his brother Arthur are noted in the will of Thomas. The most remarkable item in this deed is the mention of the “Country Line”. I have no doubt this is the Meherrin River area where it crosses the VA and NC border… that is where Thomas died in 1730. My purpose merely is to show where this guy was… note in the lower part of the page… Arthur is living next to John and they are near the “country line”… that has to be the VA/NC border. Arthur is dead by 1758, leaving an inventory; John dies 1780s.
This second John Pitman is living several miles northeast of modern Emporia, VA.

This deed has John Pitman in Edgecombe in 1746… I’m not sure why the name is in parentheses and would like to see the deed… This reference is also interesting because this Thomas Hicks may be a grandson of Robert Hix (Hicks) the notorious Indian Trader. Perhaps this is a clue to what John Pitman was doing in the area of Three Creek, VA .

William Pitman is purported to marry Judith, daughter of Wright Maclemore… I’d like to see some proof because at about this same time a daughter of Andrew Ross, also named Judith, marries a William Pitman. (noted in Ross’ will)

“Posting (not mine) – I found a deed where where William Wray or Ray of Southwarke Parish, Surry co Va bought 175 acres on south side of Three Creeks from Thomas Goodwynne but it does not say which county but I believe it was Brunswick co Va but it might have been Surry co Va at that time and that part of Surry co Va became Brunswick co Va. I will research that. It was witnessed by Edward Goodrich, Arthur Kavanaugh and Marmaduke Johnson.Lois had posted that William Wrey (Wray) received a patent 18 March 1717 for 175 acres in Surry co Va on the south side of the Three Creeks adjoining Maj Charles Goodrich’s land. As noted this patent was witnesee by Edward Goodrich. This must have been the same land. Maybe it was recorded in 1720. this was from the Virginia Land Patent Book No. 19 page 370 or 373. The only problem with this deed is it lists William Wray’s wife as Elizabeth. Was it a mistake?”

Arthur Kavanaugh was an Indian Trader who lived somewhat near the area of John Pitman when he was in VA east of Emporia. If the senior William Wray was near Hick’s Ford about 1717 then odds are he was Indian Trading…. notice all the suspects that are mentioned: a son of Robert Hicks, Arthur Kavanaugh, John Wall is in the later Brunswick Co area (a Joseph Wall is son in law of Thomas Pitman)…… Thomas Pitman was involved in Bacon’s Rebellion. Sounds like fodder for some interesting history.

You would ask…. the Ross connection is solid…. I’m skeered of the Macklemore genealogy crowd getting ticked and sending me threatening emails because I picked on on of their guys. If I throw that daughter to the wolves then maybe only one William is left.
Hmmm… I’m fishing here…. supposing this William is the son of John… perhaps the Arthur is another son???

Not sure (are you referring to Edgecombe?)…the Walls stayed near the Pitmans in VA…
(my guess is Joseph Wall moved to Edge around 1737? he sold some Meherrin property)

C. Gale is probably “Christopher Gale” … he was Clerk of the Court in many deed references (Thomas Pollock was also mentioned and he was the Governor on a couple occasions in early 1700s) My guess is that the Kirby’s Creek you refer to was near the Meherrin River. I know a John Gay moved to Edgecombe by 1745 and patented property that same year… I have a new post up now with him mentioned.

An interesting twist I read on a web post is a DNA match of a Pitman and a couple Wall descendants (25/25)… if the Joseph Wall of Surry is a bastard son that would explain his staying in close touch…
this deed is hard to reference time/place…Beech Swamp sounds like around Enfield maybe…

Hmm, the DNA isn’t too surprising considering how close the Pitmans and Walls seem to be. The Enfield Beech (Beach) Swamp is the main one I know of. The Northampton deed is definitely Edgecombe land…maybe it was registered in both places due to the grantee being in Northampton? It was registered in Edgecombe Court.

FYI, I tried to follow the Joseph Wall 150 acres. It was granted to Joseph Wall Jr., who deeded it to Joseph Wall Sr., who sold it to Wright McFarland. No record of it passing from McFarland to William Pitman (at least in what I have here.)

I’m not sure where this Joseph Wall will lead…from Hofmann’s abstracts: first grant 16, Nov. 1738 ss Fishing Creek…. last entry in 1744/5 selling 3 patents totaling about 800 ac… this was a Sr/Jr situation and they may be selling out to move?
The John Pitman/Wright Maclemore deeds seem to be near the same area… White Oak Sw, Fishing Creek… perhaps near Beech Swamp. … this William Pitman ends up in Nash Co (Sappony Creek)
At some point the “possible” son of John Pitman obtains 150 ac of Wall’s land…
It is still possible that this is only ONE John Pitman… the one who dies in 1781 near the Meherrin River mentions only daughters in his will but that is not conclusive… he seems well off with numerous slaves and could have had multiple plantations… just sayin’… his brother Arthur could have had a son Arthur and this John took him under his wing??? I can see why Forrest King came to that conclusion… I think the Jos Wall land on Mehherin Riv was near the John Pitman land of same… (they would actually be brothers if the DNA stuff is correct)…

the closest “known” Arthur Pitman is son of Ambrose. This Arthur leaves a will in Halifax in 1837… In 1832 he applied for a pension for Rev War service stating his age as 83 yrs… this would place his birth at 1749. I fail to see how a teenager could buy Elizabeth Pitman’s property in 1761.

I do think the Arthur who bought Elizabeth’s property was young, but I thought it couldn’t be the same Arthur because Ambrose’s Arthur is clearly in Halifax, and the other one *seems* to be in Edgecombe. But then again…I can’t find a lot more evidence than that to refute the idea. Ambrose’s Arthur is definitely on Beach Swamp after the Revolution. But before? His lack of presence in the records really leaves it wide open.
As for a teenager buying the land, if the teenager had the money, he could do it. A man could not sell land in his own name until age 21, but he could buy it or receive it as a gift at any age.
So far, for me, the road crew in the Edgecombe court minutes is the best piece of evidence for Arthur and Joseph Pitman living south of Swift Creek in Edgecombe.
And here’s a question…if these are two different Arthurs…what became of the Edgecombe Arthur?
