Andersons of Colonial N. Carolina

Little did I realize a dozen years ago what I was stepping into when I ran across the will of McDaniel and noticed the witness John Anderson… “I’ll just figure out who that Anderson was, I thought to myself…” 

The first problem encountered is two “misleading” abstracts of a will by Grimes:

I mean, c’mon Mr. Grimes… in the time it takes to flip one (1) page, how can you screw up an abstract this badly?

I’ve since simply dismissed the Grimes abstracts as hideous abberations of a hungover state of questionable sobriety- 

Two current authors (Stephen Bradley and David Gammon) give this account:

David Gammon’s abstract has the same names as above but he adds “that my remaining estate is to be divided between my wife Sarah and my children”.

The last Will & Testament of Danll. MCDANIEL was proved by the Oaths of John Bryant & John ANDERSON Evidences thereto and at the same time Zerah MCDANIEL whole & Sole Exx. thereto took the Oath of an Execx.

So, after a bit of consternation concerning Grimes in 1910, I defer to Mr. Bradley and Mr. Gammon and round out the known Daniel McDaniel family thusly:

If my theory is correct that Daniel McDaniel originally came from Surry County, VA, then he had a son by a previous marriage that apparently died.  From the will of Lawrence Fleming, 1710:

To Daniel Macdaniell the debt he oweth me to be disposed of as schooling his son, John Macdaniell, and give him a cow.

The son and first wife must have died between 1710 and 1715 as seen from this deed (after he removed to North Carolina)…

Not so fast … I’m having second thoughts about his first son reaching room temperature… see this land deal:

Also note this John McDaniel near Cashy River in modern Martin County (Bertie County ca 1729)… if this is the first son of Daniel McDaniel then he may have been schooled by his father to be a merchant… it seems he was easily able to travel to New York…  No small feat at the time,  I am curious???  If memory serves he also had a son with him when he and Robert Atkins supposedly murdered Ebeneezer Scroodge or whatever that merchants name was.

I mistakenly toyed with the idea that this 1741/2 Inventory might be another generation Daniel McDaniel.  Much to his amusement and sympathy for my consternation, David Gammon has weighed in with a few observations:

“My immediate belief is that 1768 Daniel is the son of 1734 Daniel, and the 1742 inventory is related to the 1734 Daniel’s estate.  1734 Daniel may have asked that his estate be kept together until the youngest child came of age, and then certain things were to happen.  In such a case, it was almost as if the estate was on hold.  By that point, widow Sarah (who was clearly the executrix of 1734 Daniel) had had time to remarry.”

So then, THIS 1769 Daniel is the father of the 1792 Daniel and the 1808 Camel.  1769 Daniel must be born in the 1720s or perhaps earlier, and would fit to be the son of the 1733 Daniel.”   [Gammon]

Gammon is of the opinion that James McDaniel was the youngest son and his coming of age prompted the 8 year delay of the final inventory…

“If we presume that James McDaniel came of age in 1744, this means he was born about 1723. ”   “By February 1744/5, James McDaniel (son of Daniel) came of age, and no longer needed a guardian.  So, Edward Brown filed an inventory of what belonged to James, took it to court, and set him free.  Remember that Daniel McDaniel left James some land as well as Negro Dick.  I suspect this is the Negro man named in the inventory.”

The guardian of James would be his uncle on his mother’s side, as proved by this deed reference:

William Maule, to Christian Brown, widow. Behalf of her two sons John and Edward Brown, upper half of 320 acres at Petacause Swamp; September 16, 1719. Test, Wm. Dowers, Thos. Jones.   Hathaway, Vol I, pg 105

(Christian Brown(e) was the widow of Thomas Browne,  father-in-law of Daniel McDaniel.)   Numerous folks have used this deed and made an assumption that Christian Browne was the daughter of William Maule; I disagree. William Maule’s will fails to mention a daughter Christian and I have found no other records connecting the two.  My thought is that this deed may be structured because John and Edward may simply be underage to legally negotiate the deal.  A caveat is that Edward was not listed in the Grimes abstract of Thomas Brown’s will.

From these records it is apparent that James McDaniel married Rachel, the daughter of William Bryant.  Rachel dies by 1761 and James remarries “Ann ____” as noted in this deed:

Since my interest and focus on this family is the “Anderson” connection, here is what I think-  the “likely” man to marry the widow of Daniel McDaniel was the John Anderson who witnessed his will. Duh.  This would perhaps place John Anderson’s age approximate to Sarah McDaniel and Daniel McDaniel.  The daughter of the second generation Daniel-Ann Anderson baffles me but a clue may be the William Anderson who died by 1763.  I have found no hard evidence of a relationship.

But left unexplained is Owen McDaniel who left his will in 1742/3:

To further confuse matters there was the George Anderson (Black) family of Bertie Co. at this time… my assumption is that this Sarah Anderson is his daughter.

Volinder HARE the sum of Three pounds for her expenses of lying in &c. also the sum of Five pounds for one years maintainance of sd. child and that he further pays the sum of L5 p:year for four years for its future maintainance;  David FOUNTAIN became Security for the payment of the aforesaid sums.

The aforesd. (John crossed out) Daniel MCDANIEL is Ordered to pay down the sum of Three pounds to the sd. Volinder HARE for the expences &c. of lying in of another child begotten on her by sd. MCDANIEL also the sum of Five pounds for one years maintainance of sd child And that he further pays the sum of five pounds p:year for four years for its future maintainance; Lemuel JELKS became security for the aforesaid sums of money.

This outline is on Flagg Run, and Runeroy Marsh…in

various spellings. Widow BRYANT, Aaron ELLIS, Michael

BRYANT, and a faint feeling of William BRYANT, with Robt

HODGE and Needham BRYANT are located in this area.

I am collecting entries to try to pinpoint William BRYANT

and how Michael obtained the land he sold to Aaron ELLIS

in 1757…Cathy Hart FARRIS.

Hoggard and I have determined, after talking to local

historians, farmers, and hunters who know the Lewiston-

Woodville area, the following:

1)Jumping Run was a pre civil war church, probably

Methodist, just a few blocks from the center of town of

present day Lewiston-Woodville where the  Eason house was

built afterwards.  (The Eason house burned around 1960).

2)Jumping Run is a small stream that empties into

Griffin’s Mill Pond, and into Flag Run Gut/Wharf (neither

Jumping Run or Flag Run are named on the CSA-Woodville

map on the Bertie Page, but are just above Griffin’s

Mill.).

3)Jumping Run was also a path.  On the road from

Lewiston-Woodville to Kelford (308) there was a cart path

leading to the Roanoke River near Griffin’s

Quarters/Griffin’s Mill Pond.  The area was mostly

swampland and almost impassable, so the locals got

together in the mid 1800s and cut poles to place them in

the swamp bottom to provide a road bed.  Only a “good”

mule could make it across and then ONLY if the driver

would “jump and run along” beside him. “Jump and Run”

became, over time, Jumping Run.

So Jumping Run was a church, a stream, and a path, and,

when mentioned in deeds, defined an area approximately

where the path and stream were. The church was not

located in that immediate area of the stream/path.

4) Flag Run was a path/road at one time leading from the

Indian Woods area and through the Woodville part of

present day Lewiston-Woodville to the Gut/Wharf known as

Flag Run Landing near Griffin’s Mill shown on the CSA

Woodville map..  There is a portion of that road today

(paved!) still named Flag Run Road.  Apparently, there

was never a Flag Run Stream.

Locations of Flagy Run from C&P Vol III, These are very

early entries of this name Flagy Run, I believe to be the

same place as the Bertie Flagg Run.
