Sarah McDaniel (widow) and John Anderson?
Little did I realize a dozen years ago what I was stepping into when I ran across the will of McDaniel and noticed the witness John Anderson… “I’ll just figure out who that Anderson was, I thought to myself…”
The first problem encountered is two “misleading” abstracts of a will by Grimes:
MCDANIELL, DANIEL Bertie Precinct
April 16, 1733. May 2, 1734. Sons: NICHOLAS, DANIEL, JAMES (negroes to each). Daughters: ANN and SARAH MCDANIEL. Wife and Executrix: SARAH. Witnesses: JOHN ANDERSON, ALEX. WIGHT, JOHN BRYAN. Original missing. Recorded in Book 1722-1735, page 295.
(Source: Abstracts of North Carolina Wills, By: J. Bryan Grimes, Secretary of State, 1910, Page 229)
MACKDANIELL, DANIEL Bertie Precinct
April 16, 1733. Sons: DANIEL, ARCHBELL, ELEXANDER, JAMES. Daughters: MARY, ANN and SARAH MACKDANIELL. Wife and Executrix: SARAH. Witnesses: JNO. ANDERSON, ALEXR. WEIGHT, JOHN BRYAN. No probate.

I mean, c’mon Mr. Grimes… in the time it takes to flip one (1) page, how can you screw up an abstract this badly?
I’ve since simply dismissed the Grimes abstracts as hideous abberations of a hungover state of questionable sobriety-
Two current authors (Stephen Bradley and David Gammon) give this account:
dated April 16, 1733, proved 2 May 1734
of Bartie Precinct
Son Daniell – four heifers and 3 calves, 1000 pounds of pork
Son Archbell – Negro boy Seasur
Son Elexander – man Jack
son James – man Dick, plantation where I now live, a horse
daughtrer Mary Mackdaniell – bed
Wife Sarah – horse, bed
Daughter Anne Mackdaniell – horse
Daughter Sarah Macdaniell – horse
Rest of my moveable estate to my wife and her children that are lawfully born of her one body.
Executrix was wife Sarah
Witnessed by Jno. Anderson, Alexr.. Wright, John Bryan
(source: Bradley’s abstracts of the Sec. of State wills)
David Gammon’s abstract has the same names as above but he adds “that my remaining estate is to be divided between my wife Sarah and my children”.

“Courthouse on Timber Branch” Aug 1733…
The last Will & Testament of Danll. MCDANIEL was proved by the Oaths of John Bryant & John ANDERSON Evidences thereto and at the same time Zerah MCDANIEL whole & Sole Exx. thereto took the Oath of an Execx.
So, after a bit of consternation concerning Grimes in 1910, I defer to Mr. Bradley and Mr. Gammon and round out the known Daniel McDaniel family thusly:
Daniel McDaniel (b. unk – d. 1733), wife Sarah
… son Daniel
… son Archbell
… son Elexander
… son James
… dau Mary
… dau Anne
… dau Sarah
—————————————————
If my theory is correct that Daniel McDaniel originally came from Surry County, VA, then he had a son by a previous marriage that apparently died. From the will of Lawrence Fleming, 1710:
To Daniel Macdaniell the debt he oweth me to be disposed of as schooling his son, John Macdaniell, and give him a cow.
The son and first wife must have died between 1710 and 1715 as seen from this deed (after he removed to North Carolina)…
Not so fast … I’m having second thoughts about his first son reaching room temperature… see this land deal:
Also note this John McDaniel near Cashy River in modern Martin County (Bertie County ca 1729)… if this is the first son of Daniel McDaniel then he may have been schooled by his father to be a merchant… it seems he was easily able to travel to New York… No small feat at the time, I am curious??? If memory serves he also had a son with him when he and Robert Atkins supposedly murdered Ebeneezer Scroodge or whatever that merchants name was.

I mistakenly toyed with the idea that this 1741/2 Inventory might be another generation Daniel McDaniel. Much to his amusement and sympathy for my consternation, David Gammon has weighed in with a few observations:
“My immediate belief is that 1768 Daniel is the son of 1734 Daniel, and the 1742 inventory is related to the 1734 Daniel’s estate. 1734 Daniel may have asked that his estate be kept together until the youngest child came of age, and then certain things were to happen. In such a case, it was almost as if the estate was on hold. By that point, widow Sarah (who was clearly the executrix of 1734 Daniel) had had time to remarry.”
Will of Daniel McDaniel, Edgecombe Will Book A, page 169
5 June 1768, proved Feb. Court 1769
son Daniel McDaniel – plantation where he now lives, which is part of the land where I now live.
Daughter Ann Anderson – 20 shillings
To Archible McDaniel (no relationship given) – 4 heifers
To Daniel McDaniel – 100 acres on the wood pocosin
to Camel McDaniel – land where I now live, but as long as he is underage, I lend this to my son John
Daughter Elizabeth McDaniel – 30 pounds
Remaining furniture, etc. is to be sold and proceeds divided among my sons Camel and John and my daughter Elizabeth
Executor is my oldest son Daniel, and my son John, who are to serve as guardians for my two yougnest children Elizabeth and Camel
Wit: William Thraikill, William Clark, Speir Coffield
“(The part where the furniture is to be sold and proceeds divided among Camel, John, and Elizabeth explains the division you found.)
So then, THIS 1769 Daniel is the father of the 1792 Daniel and the 1808 Camel. 1769 Daniel must be born in the 1720s or perhaps earlier, and would fit to be the son of the 1733 Daniel.” [Gammon]
So back to the children in the will of 1733…
Daniel McDaniel (b. unk – d. 1733), wife Sarah (nee Browne)
… son Daniel (d. 1768)
… son Archbell (d. 1744) no children
… son Elexander (d. unk. after 1754… some leads point to his moving)
… son James (underage in 1733 will)
… dau Mary
… dau Anne
… dau Sarah

Gammon is of the opinion that James McDaniel was the youngest son and his coming of age prompted the 8 year delay of the final inventory…
“If we presume that James McDaniel came of age in 1744, this means he was born about 1723. ” “By February 1744/5, James McDaniel (son of Daniel) came of age, and no longer needed a guardian. So, Edward Brown filed an inventory of what belonged to James, took it to court, and set him free. Remember that Daniel McDaniel left James some land as well as Negro Dick. I suspect this is the Negro man named in the inventory.”
The guardian of James would be his uncle on his mother’s side, as proved by this deed reference:
William Maule, to Christian Brown, widow. Behalf of her two sons John and Edward Brown, upper half of 320 acres at Petacause Swamp; September 16, 1719. Test, Wm. Dowers, Thos. Jones. Hathaway, Vol I, pg 105
(Christian Brown(e) was the widow of Thomas Browne, father-in-law of Daniel McDaniel.) Numerous folks have used this deed and made an assumption that Christian Browne was the daughter of William Maule; I disagree. William Maule’s will fails to mention a daughter Christian and I have found no other records connecting the two. My thought is that this deed may be structured because John and Edward may simply be underage to legally negotiate the deal. A caveat is that Edward was not listed in the Grimes abstract of Thomas Brown’s will.

John Nairn and wife Christian of Tyrell to Marmaduke Norfleet of Perquimans
200 acres on south side of Marratuck known as Scotland Neck, adj. Daniel McDaniel and others (son of first Daniel McDaniel)
Again I digress to gather my thoughts:
Daniel McDaniel (b. unk – d. 1733), wife Sarah (father Thomas Browne d. 1718)
… son Daniel (d. 1768) b. at least by 1716
… son Archbell (d. 1744) no issue
… son Elexander (d. unk. after 1754… some leads point to his moving)
… son James (underage in 1733 will…of age 1744; born about 1723; youngest son)
… dau Mary
… dau Anne
… dau Sarah
Since my interest and focus on this family is the “Anderson” connection, here is what I think- the “likely” man to marry the widow of Daniel McDaniel was the John Anderson who witnessed his will. Duh. This would perhaps place John Anderson’s age approximate to Sarah McDaniel and Daniel McDaniel. The daughter of the second generation Daniel-Ann Anderson baffles me but a clue may be the William Anderson who died by 1763. I have found no hard evidence of a relationship.
But left unexplained is Owen McDaniel who left his will in 1742/3:

And also in the unexplained shadows is Nicholas McDaniel… (who possibly may have only been a speck of dust on Grimes’ spectacles).
And this John McDaniel who apparently was around between 1730 and 1755 per this deed:

To further confuse matters there was the George Anderson (Black) family of Bertie Co. at this time… my assumption is that this Sarah Anderson is his daughter.

This outline is on Flagg Run, and Runeroy Marsh…in
various spellings. Widow BRYANT, Aaron ELLIS, Michael
BRYANT, and a faint feeling of William BRYANT, with Robt
HODGE and Needham BRYANT are located in this area.
I am collecting entries to try to pinpoint William BRYANT
and how Michael obtained the land he sold to Aaron ELLIS
in 1757…Cathy Hart FARRIS.
from Virginia CRILLEY and the NCBertie list… David
Hoggard and I have determined, after talking to local
historians, farmers, and hunters who know the Lewiston-
Woodville area, the following:
1)Jumping Run was a pre civil war church, probably
Methodist, just a few blocks from the center of town of
present day Lewiston-Woodville where the Eason house was
built afterwards. (The Eason house burned around 1960).
2)Jumping Run is a small stream that empties into
Griffin’s Mill Pond, and into Flag Run Gut/Wharf (neither
Jumping Run or Flag Run are named on the CSA-Woodville
map on the Bertie Page, but are just above Griffin’s
Mill.).
3)Jumping Run was also a path. On the road from
Lewiston-Woodville to Kelford (308) there was a cart path
leading to the Roanoke River near Griffin’s
Quarters/Griffin’s Mill Pond. The area was mostly
swampland and almost impassable, so the locals got
together in the mid 1800s and cut poles to place them in
the swamp bottom to provide a road bed. Only a “good”
mule could make it across and then ONLY if the driver
would “jump and run along” beside him. “Jump and Run”
became, over time, Jumping Run.
So Jumping Run was a church, a stream, and a path, and,
when mentioned in deeds, defined an area approximately
where the path and stream were. The church was not
located in that immediate area of the stream/path.
4) Flag Run was a path/road at one time leading from the
Indian Woods area and through the Woodville part of
present day Lewiston-Woodville to the Gut/Wharf known as
Flag Run Landing near Griffin’s Mill shown on the CSA
Woodville map.. There is a portion of that road today
(paved!) still named Flag Run Road. Apparently, there
was never a Flag Run Stream.
Locations of Flagy Run from C&P Vol III, These are very
early entries of this name Flagy Run, I believe to be the
same place as the Bertie Flagg Run.
Here is my corrected message
(1): Sarah Ann McDaniel: (Aunt): (Daughter of Daniel and Sarah). She was born about 1715 in Chowan County NC. She died in 1798 Jones County North Carolina. She went by her middle name of Ann.
Her first husband was John Anderson. He died shortly after 16 April 1733. John’s plantation was about 19 miles ESE of Halifax, NC on the Urhaw Swamp and north of the Roanoke River. It was located below James Anderson’s plantation and Ann’s parent’s plantation.
John was one of the witnesses for Ann’s father’s will.
They had a number of children. Their names of their 11 sons were James Anderson named after John Anderson’s father, Daniel Anderson named after Ann’s father, John Anderson, George, Peter, Isaac, William, Isom, Christopher and Alexander named apparently after brothers in both families. If they had any daughters I haven’t found their names.
Ann married again to George Martin. It was a very short marriage as he died before October 1734.
After his death Ann bought 50 acres from Thompson on 11/21/1735. She had returned to her first married name, Anderson. The 50 acres are located South of the Roanoke River, across the river from James Anderson’s old plantation and across the river and West of John Anderson’s old plantation and South of the Conoconnara Swamp.
Ann married for the third time to Joseph Anderson before 21 November 1735. He was Attorney General from 16th April 1741, to the 27th of October 1742, and afterwards from the 6th July 1743, to 17th May 1747, at £80. per annum.
Joseph died about 1757.
Family records say that her son Isaac fought under Washington at Valley Forge during the Revolution.
Found online:
“Ann Mackdaniel Anderson Martin Anderson becomes a matriarch. Ann gained political influence through subsequent marriages to an Attorney George Martin and Judge Joseph Anderson who was also the King’s Attorney for the Colony. We believe she was responsible for obtaining large land grants for her Anderson children and grandchildren as well as her Mackdaniel brothers on the Cape Fear River, South of the Grandville line.”
Added note: I don’t believe Sarah, wife of Daniel I remarried. Several records show her dying soon after her husband died. I believe the Sarah Ann Anderson who signed the property list for Daniel I was their daughter, my Aunt Sarah Ann McDaniel Anderson shown above.

Hi Dukki
Thanks for the comments. In your added note concerning Sarah, wife of Daniel, you mention “Several records show her dying soon after her husband died.”… Do you have a source you can cite for these records?

Hello,
You ask about John McDaniel? I believe that he was, in fact, Daniel McDaniel’s (1734) youngest son; and Sarah (Brown) McDaniel was with child (John) when Daniel passed.
John McDaniel’s father-figure may have very well been John Anderson.
What are your thoughts?

Earlier you mentioned the son of Daniel MacDaniel, Alexander. I remember back ( Means that I do not remember) that Alexander married a Rogers…Rebecca perhaps but I never knew who her father was. Only John Rogers (iv) lived on or near Fishing Creek with a son Jacob ca 1734+. I know, Fishing Creek is huge. Anything come to mind.

i’m thinking this might be the Alexander McDaniel that moved to Marlboro County, S.C. with George McDaniel (born 1755). George’s first wife was an Earle from Fishing Creek, as he was, but I have never known for sure who George’s father was. I have to assume it was Alexander. any ideas?

I lose track of this Alexander McDaniel (from Edgecombe) about 1754. Since there are no death records (I can find) it seems logical he simply moved. If you have hard evidence of a connection to Edgecombe (a possible daughter-in-law from Fishing Creek) it seems like a good lead to follow. Good luck hunting…

Do you think Ann McDaniel could have been born earlier than 1715 possibly by a former wife? The dat I have of her marriage is 1722 and even for that time that is a little young.

Hi.
Does anyone know much about John Nairn ? He seems to have been married first to Mary ….? & secondly to Christian Maule ? , widow of Brown. He died before Jan 1739.Christian Nairne (widow) was administering his estate in 1740.He owed Jethro Butler money. Christian Nairne gained permission in Open Court (Tyrell Co) in 1740 to sell two Slaves from the deceased estate of john Nairn at Market. I think this is the same John Nairn ? who was at one time ”Marshall” & then ”deputy Marshall” to Marshall John Hacklefield.A William Nearne/ (Nairn), wife Elizabeth & daughter Mary acted as ”executors” to a will of James Blount in 1716/1717. In 1726 in the court at Edenton , John Nairn & James Castellaw had a bill of Indictment against them for a ”Misdemeanor” .This James Castellaw was apparently born in Renfrew , Scotland in abt 1685, son of Thomas Castellaw a Presbyterian Minister.
Any definitive info on John Nairn, ie where and when he was born, when he arrived in America, who his first wife was ? etc would be greatly Appreciated .
Regards Kerry Nairn.

>>Ann Anderson baffles me but a clue may be the William Anderson who died by 1763. I have found no hard evidence of a relationship.
There is a marriage record between an Ann McDaniel and a Wm Anderson in 1762 Edgecombe CO NC. Do you know who this William Anderson is?

I love the research you have done! I just stumbled upon it doing my own research on my McDaniel line… I’ve got a couple of questions for you, understanding the point of your research was for the Anderson line…
1) Did you ever find out who Owen McDaniel was???
2) Did you find out any more info on the mysterious “John McDaniel”???
I ask because I’m linked directly through DNA to a Jacob McDaniel (b c1750, North Carolina, d 21 Apr 1833 Jones County GA). According to all the theories I find, he is the son of John McDaniel, who is the son of the Daniel McDaniel, m. Sarah Browne. But I can’t find any evidence that 1) John was the son of Daniel, and 2) Jacob is the son of John. I was looking into Owen McDaniel when I ran across your research…besides being married to Ellener, and had a s-i-l of Jethro Butler, I can’t find anything else about him? I know he was in Chowen Co with Daniel McDaniel, and it seemed they both moved to Bertie Co (though parts of Chowen Co became Bertie Co…so they might have never moved!) I was wondering if he fathered any of these other McDaniels running around here at the time that did not belong to Daniel McDaniel? I saw other folks above mention that Sarah may have been pregnant with John when Daniel passed…that would have been (dates according to different accounts) about 9 years after her last child?

Hi Cori
I have never delved very deep into Owen McDaniel and his gang… so I can’t add much more. However, with that said, I have a wealth of info concerning the sons of Sarah McDaniel…
I worked closely with David Gammon on these guys… he added quite a few jewels to the research. Sorry, but my notes are scattered around various places on this site… about the best advice to find it is use my “search button”… seriously I have to now search my own site to make any sense out of it.

I’m the DNA project manager for the Clan Donald. This McDaniel line is my current main project, as I’m part of it (in the pure male line). Our project is large (2500 men) but there are about 20 in this McDaniel area.
What is clear is that all of us descend from the same man in a time frame 1500-1600. Most people claim
that that is the famous Sorely Boy McDonnell. We have four men that descend from the John McDaniel who married Katherine Rogers and died in 1809. All of them are usually listed as descendants of Sarah Browne.
I and some others probably descend from the contemporaneous John McDaniel who married Annis Pasley, and this is backed up by several autosomal matches who match only Pasley but not McDaniel. However,
we all do match the purported McDaniel/Browne couple autosomally as well as with Y-SNPs.
We’d love to sort out who this John McDaniel really was as we have two men descended from him in the pure male line.

I have some recent research found here…
I am now leaning to the theory that John McDaniel may have been the son of Daniel McD from a previous
first marriage in Surry County, VA. Even with my own ancestor George Anderson, I am finding it somewhat
common to run across these “first families”where a man would simply start all over again with a new crop of kids. I did a humorous article about “The Great Pistol Caper” pretty much as a joke but now I am taking it seriously… it seems a John McDaniel sailed from NC to New York City. My theory is that may have been a regular trading route?
I have not compiled these threads into a coherent body of research so the best advice is to simply use my search box and fumble and stumble around my various rants. Welcome to my confusion sorting out the clues.

I did a very complicated DNA search. That is, I first looked for matches to Benny McDaniel, one of the persons in our project who has his DNA on Gedmatch. Benny claims descend from the purported son John (above) of Sarah Browne. I then used Gedmatch tools that other sites don’t have to look for Browne ancestors of these matches. I looked at their genealogy files and found that two of them matcha Browne at the correct location and time. Neither matches to a McDaniel or related name at the correct place or time, though one does to a later one in Georgia. The two Brownes are shown as ancestors of Sarah Brown (m. Daniel McDaniel ) descending from John Browne, b. 1626, Europe, Fayette, Georgia, USA, d. 1712, , Chowan, North Carolina, USA who married Mary Boddie, b. 18 May 1635, Ingatestone, Essex, , England, d. 18 May 1635, , Chowan, North Carolina, USA (data copied as-is from Gedmatch). Searches of the two Gedcoms show no other likely links to Benny’s genealogy file, though its not too gigantic depth except the pure all male line.
This is at least some additional evidence that Benny and hence John might actually be a descendant of Sarah Browne, as he claims. Other than the link back to Ireland, the line from Daniel m. Browne to John m. Rodgers is the weel link in our trees. I find no similr support from DNA that John’s childred actually descend from a Rogers, but of course ssuch earches are dependant on a statistical miracle.
Barry’s close cousins by DNA don’t have DNA files on Gedmatch and a similar search without their tools is near hopeless.

Any Boddie connection is an error. Junk it. I have proved that link is false. No amount of hand wringing or gnashing of teeth will lead to Boddie of Isle of Wight.
John Browne was from Nansemond, he had two sons… Thomas and William.
Daniel McDaniel was the son in law of Thomas Browne. He married the daughter of Thomas Browne (Sarah).
This Daniel McDaniel hailed from Surry County. The Ingatestone stuff is nonsense… junk it. (read the comments for John Browne… all the hand wringing is there and I proved it wrong)
The Rogers are connected to the Brownes from Surry County, VA in the late 1600s. they relocated to Nansemond County and then to Chowan County, NC.
All of the proof is in my notes. My notes are not for squeamish people who want easy answers. I have spent 20 years proving all my data. The link to the Brownes and Rogers is in my notes. I cannot read it for your clients… they have to read it for themselves.
———————–
As for your last name of McDonald… I have recently ran across some data to support my theory that the names were corrupted in the early 1720s in NC…
Owen McDaniel = Oen McDonnel or McDonald… capich? Owen McDaniel is either another son of the early Daniel McDaniel or he “may” be a son of the son of Daniel McDaniel Sr d1734. (that is my theory)

Oh… and Doug… note in the will of Daniel McDaniel that he did not mention or is there a legatee named JOHN. That is why I harp on the fact that a son JOHN was from a first marriage in Surry County, VA.
Refer to my notes… it is all detailed. (but remember this is my theory… do not take this ball and run with it without my disclaimer. The internet is filled with enough nonsense without adding to it)

Dr Doug, I’m the “barry” you referred to below. We spoke in August and exchanged info when I signed up my father, Bruce McDaniel Jr, to your Clan Donald DNA test. My father does not have a GEDmatch account, but I do. It is PJ6144640. In addition to my uncle, I do the research for my family…my dad is 82 and just sits back and spits into a cup when I ask him to. Would you be able to do the same sort of search for me like you did for Benny McDaniel? He constantly shows up as one of my (and my Uncle Greg McDaniel) closest relatives. According to these DNA sites, we seem to be linked to three McDaniel / McDonald lines… Daniel McDaniel m. Sarah Brown, John McDaniel m. Katherine Rogers, and John McDaniel m. Anniss Pasley (supposedly…based on your last research input from August).
As for the discussion on Owen McDaniel, I have an Owen Mackdaniell in Richmond Co, Va and in Northumberland Co, Va as early as 1694. If he was at least around 20 years old at the time, he would have been born around 1674 or earlier. He very well could have been a brother or uncle to the early Daniel and John McDaniel lines.
Marc, sorry to hijack your blog…but that’s basically what you did to my day when you sent out an update this morning! 😁 I have spent all morning going over your notes for the umpteenth time.
While re-reading all the comments, the story about the 2 brothers being sent over as indentured servants / slaves in the early to mid 1600s from Scotland by their father to get away from an upcoming was is intriguing… It goes along with a note I found in the book “10 Generations of McDaniel Genes”, that John McDaniel’s (1695) father (John McDonnell) was a political refugee from Scotland who settled in Richmond Co, Va.
Dr Doug, didn’t you say we may possibly hail from Dunnyveg? (vice Co Clare Ireland)
All exciting and extremely frustrating stuff!
