Andersons of Colonial N. Carolina

meant what they said, said what they meant

a “colonial” Edgecombe cemetery? … William Anderson (d.1789) ?

An intrepid genealogy co-conspirator (Janice) just emailed me a map of a cemetery which the person who found it designated as Anderson and Watkins.  Janice states that her friend is no longer active in her surveys due to age.  What I find interesting is that the location is exactly where I have speculated that William Anderson (d.1789) lived in his final years.  I would be incredulous if an extant marker from 1790 exists but perhaps some of the other family members are there.  His widow Mourning and son Henry directly inherited the property and he also had several daughters that settled nearby.

As I live in SW Florida, I can’t trudge through the fields and search it out so if any adventurous types in the neighborhood feel the urge… please report.

This is my best guess using Google Maps…

Thanks again Janice, and your friend… this may be a nugget.

And I think I misspelled cemetery in the map…. sue me… this is a hobby.

See under “Pages”   George Anderson b.1756  for additional map info…

The Geraldus Anderson mentioned (sometimes Gary or other variations) I can only guess may be the oldest son

of George Anderson (b.1756).  In the 1790 and 1800 census, George has an older male that I have not accounted

for other than possibly this “Geraldus” (his son George Jr was born 1798 and son John was born about 1802 or so).

  1. William Anderson does not have a grave stone in this cemetery. Only Elizabeth Anderson and the family of her great niece Lucy Anderson Watkins family. Property owned by Elizabeth Anderson (1784-1880).

  2. I have recently been researching the Anderson Property in Wendell NC.. I believe Henry and Williams family is buried there, if this is the same Henry and William. I believe Henry’s son is Jesse Staton Anderson(born 1810) and James Lawrence Anderson (born 1840) is buried there along with 9 other family members including a Moses Todd Jr. born 1775.. This is really exciting stuff to me and I’ll be going back to the property this weekend to clean the graves and explore!! I have been really confused because Ive been seeing posts about the Anderson Wadkins Cemetery but I realize these might be 2 separate places!! Please help lol what was the name of Jesse Anderson’s property.. Was it Faulks Branch?? There is a old stone structure deep in the woods by the Anderson Cemetery and I really wish I could find out what it was!! I really enjoy reading this blog. Thank you – Brice!

    • I speculate that some of the early Edgecombe Anderson folks are buried here. The George Anderson family relocated to Tennessee in the 1830s and have proven roots there. The Jesse Staton line may have been related to the Andersons of Edgecombe county but it is so far still unproven.
