The Joseph Pitman Game

with 22 comments

Read the post just before this to get a grasp of what this post is about.  With my vast audience I figure at least a dozen people are enthralled by this… maybe 13.

Below is a chronology of the “Court Minutes”, Book 1-4 of Edgecombe County 1757-1790.  I have extracted only the Joseph Pitmans out of the vast Pitman Pie.

The object of the game is to figure out the logical choice as to “who is the Joseph who was most likely left standing to sign the will of William Anderson in 1789.”… or Who is the last Old Phart Joseph left standing in 1788…. whichever, I’m flexible with rules.

The term “Quaker” is used below to identify a family group… while the later children may not be Quakers I still use it as a basis to link them to their earlier forebears and in some cases neighbors.

A distinctly different Joseph is who I refer to as the “Constable”.

Please let me know if you can identify any Joseph who is not connected to the “Quakers” or the “Constable.”

 Got it? Let’s go….

Joseph Pitman

Edgecombe Co., NC, Court Minutes 1744-1762 Book I, GoldenWest Marketing Genealogy, Temple City, CA

[187]   Feb 1757/8

Jos. PITMAN son of Robert (Overseer marked out) Constable in Room of George WIMBERLY

(This is a critical bit of info… this is “the Bailiff” referred to in the research of Donald Gordon. Note also that I have found only ONE Robert Pitman of this era and area. This Joseph was clearly born at least by 1736… I have a bible record of his brother Samuel b.1736. I think Joseph was born a bit earlier.)

[191]   Feb 1757/8

Philip THOMAS in the room of Joseph PITMAN Overseer

[241]   Jun 1759

Wm. GREEN to Joseph PITMAN Deed prov’d by Jesse GREEN

(Nov. 24, 1758 William Green sold to Joseph Pitman 90 acres on the south bank of Tar River at the mouth of Deep Branch adjoinjng said Pitman…. Wit: Joseph (J) Pitman and Jesse Green.  These 2 Josephs are father and son… the “Quakers”… uh …. I think)

[267]   Sep 1760

Robert COLEMAN is appointed Oversr. of the Road from SWEETENS Landan (sic) on Tar River

to MIALS Bridge on SWIFT Creek.  Ordered that the following hands Work on the same, Towit:

John MOORE          John FOUNTAIN          Wm. ROLLINS          James BROWN

John HATCHER       Joseph PHILIPS          Joshua SIKES           Robert MANOR

Aaron ODUM           Andw. ROSS              John ONEALS           Wm. ANDERSON

Joseph PITMAN       Arthr. PITMAN            James STALLIONS    Gregory STALLIONS

Moses WOODWARD &       Robert COLEMAN

(note the neighbors… particularly William Anderson… these folks are clearly north of Tar River in 1760.  The 2 Josephs noted in [241] above are clearly south of Tar River)

[272]   Dec 1760

The last Will & Testament of Moses PITMAN Deced. was Exhibited by the Exrs. therein named

and at the same time Joseph PITMAN one of the People called Quakers affirmed that he saw the

sd. Moses PITMAN Execute the sd. Will & that he saw Jno. GAY & Jesse GREEN sign the same

as Evidence thereto & at the same Time the Exr. Qualified acco. to Law

(note the name Jesse Green… see [241] above)

[301]   Sep 1762

Jonathan COLEMAN appointed Guardian of Aaron COLEMAN orphan of Charles COLEMAN

(Robert COLEMAN crossed out) & John MURPHREE & Joseph PITMAN Sec. in the sum of

£200 Proc.

( Jonathan Coleman married the sister of the wife of William Anderson… note the involvement of Joseph Pitman “the Constable”)

[304]   Sep 1762

Deed of Sale from Elizabeth PITMAN to Joseph PITMAN proved by Aaron COLEMAN

(Elizabeth Pitman’s property adjoined William Anderson… note above which Joseph Pitman gave Security for this Aaron……I say the Constable… what do you think?)

[310]   Sep 1761-Dec 1761

Ordred that Joseph PITMAN & John BAILY be appointed Searchers

(I don’t know where Baily lived?…… sue me.)

[318]   Dec 1761-Mar1762

A Deed of Sale from Elizabeth PITMAN to Arthur PITMAN proved by Sherd. HAYWOOD Esq.

(note the presence of Arthur Pitman in [267] above and the proximity to Joseph Pitman. I say the Constable.)

(…further down the transcrpt)

A Deed of Gift from Henry HORN to Wm. HORN proved by the Affirmation of Joseph

PITMAN a Quaker

(need I point out the obvious? “the Affirmation bit”… Horn was south of Tar River and he was also a Quaker)

[342]   Sep 1762

A Deed of Sale from Arthur PITMAN to Joseph PITMAN proved by Wm. ANDERSON

(see [304] and [267]…. the Constable )

[343]   Sep 1762

A Deed of Sale from William GAY to Joseph PITMAN acknowledged

(William Gay was a Quaker and lived south of Tar River adjoining sd. Pitman)

[347]   Sep 1762

Ordred that the following Persons be a jury to lay off a Road from the foot of the New Bridge

to be built over the Tar river the nearest and most convenient Way into the road that leads

Tarbo. Towit:

(list of names including)   Joseph PITMAN…William ANDERSON

(I’m thinkin’ the Constable)

Edgecombe Co., NC, Court Minutes 1763-1774 Book II, GoldenWest Marketing Genealogy, Temple City, CA

[11]   Jan 1763

John BAILEY & Joseph PITMAN Searchers

(Baily again…where did he live exactly?)

[12]   Jan 1763

Joseph PITMAN constable in the Room of John MURFREE

(I think most folks will agree that being a Quaker came with a “stigma”… I can cite laws, particularly during the early 1700s of Perquimins Precinct/ County that specifically forbade Quakers from holding an office such as Constable.  My hunch is this is the son of Robert)

[18]   Jun 1763

Grand Jury retur’d towit:

Joseph STRICKLAND    James WILLIAMS        Soloman NETTLE              Kindred CARTER

Lycence is on Mocon granted to Abram ALQUI__ to keep an Ordinary and Victualling house

at his dwelling Plantation he thereupon enterd into Bo__ with Isaac WILSON and Joseph

PITMAN Securities.

(with my concerns of the Quaker “stigma”, I hazard a guess that this may be the son-in-law of Andrew Ross who had property near William Anderson….  but the Ross’ had property in several areas of Edgecombe including the area of the Quaker Josephs.  But I may be blowing smoke because one of the Quaker Josephs served in the militia- 1750s…bottom line… I don’t know about this William guy… see [80] below.)

[128]   Feb 1780

Deed of Sale from Joseph PITMAN to William FOLK proved by the Oath of Joel HORN.

Deed of Sale from Joseph PRICE to Moses PITMAN proved by the Oath of Joel HORN.

(Is this Joseph Price related to the Price living next to William Anderson?  actually this Joseph Price lived near the Quakers) (I call this Quakers)

[231]   A Deed of Gift from Joseph PITMAN to Wm. FOLK? proved by Joel HORN.

(William Faulk was the son-in-law of Joseph Pitman of southside Tar River…. Quaker)

EDGECOMBE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, COURT MINUTES, 1786-1792, BOOK IV, Haun

(?) (The Joseph d.1763 left an orphan Thomas… I can’t call this because the 2 Quakers are dead and a pesky young Joseph shows up in an estate sale of an Amy Pitman of 1791 but its obvious this is a young phart that can’t be associated with the distinguished Old Pharts that I’m analyzing. Got it? Good… Let’s continue….)

[238]   May 1790

The Last Will & Testament of William ANDREWS decd. was proved by the Oaths of Elijah HORN & Joseph PITMAN & Elijah PRICE the exor therein qualified and at same time took out Letters Testamty.

(this is William ANDERSON)

[239]   May 1790

Inventory of the estate of William ANDERSON deceased returned on Oath by the exor.

(The will was signed by Joseph Pitman the son of Robert Pitman.   I think they knew each other since childhood and quite possibly were cousins.)  If you think this may be one of the mystery sons of Thomas Pitman from his 1750ish Will then I will just shake my head. Those kids would be young pharts.)

1790 Edgecombe County Census

Joseph Pitman  1 over 16,  2 males under 16,  2 females

(This is the only Joseph Pitman on the census… but if you are one of those who take a look at the neighbors it could easily appear that this guy is living south of the Tar River which would be one of the Quaker clan.  It is pure coincidence.)

Michael Horn

Sarah Barnes

John Pitman

Joseph Price

Ann Horn

Jethro Pittman (son of the Quaker Joseph, d. 1787)

Ann Pittman

Briton Adams

Amos Rose

Sion Trevathan

Frederick Trevathan  (witness to will of 1787…the Quaker)

Wm. Deloach

Wm. Elenor

Joseph Pitman  (son of Robert? or a young phart?)

(Until their senior years, William Anderson and Joseph Pitman lived northside Tar River near Swift Creek and near a little creek called Falling Run.  In 1787 Anderson moved southside Tar River just above the modern Wiggins Lake.  He made his will there. “a” Joseph Pitman was living just west of him.)

Edge. Co. Db 9, page 335, deed date 25 Mar 1797, recorded Feb Ct 1800,

John Haywood, Raleigh, NC to Michael Williams, Edge. Co for $250, a

tract on the west side of Deloachs Branch containing (220) acres being

part of a tract which Joseph Pitman presently lives & being the whole

of the land belonging to the said Haywood on the west side of Deloachs

Branch except that part where Joseph Pitman lives, containing 25 acres,

signed John Haywood, wit S. Haywood, John Hudson. Abstracted 9-27-06,

NCA film C.037.40009, CTC.

(the only Joseph this could be is the son of Robert… who was in the 1790 census, being that he was an Old Phart… otherwise it is a young phart.)

Got it?

Hugh B. Johnston’s problem with “the problem Pitman”

with 9 comments

Joseph Pittman, son of Thomas Pittman, was born on January 11, 1724-
1725, and settled in lower Edgecombe County. His wife Elizabeth was
born on January 11, 1724 (?) and died on March 31, 1761. They were
members of the Rich Square Monthly Meeting of the Quaker Society by
September 6, 1760, but he was on November 16, 177- “dismissed for
proposing marriage to one outside of the Society.: (This reference
could have been to Thomas Pittman, Jr.)

Children of Joseph and Elizabeth Pittman:

Faith Pittman was born on October 30, 1747.
Amy Pittman was born on May 2, 1749.
Elizabeth Pittman was born on January 4, 1752.
Thomas Pittman, Jr., was born on October 8, 1756.
Abia Pittman was born on March 12, 1758.
Patience Pittman was born on September 21, 1760.

There were quite a few Pitmans or Pittmans living in Edgecombe County
by 1760, but no one appears to have worked out all their
relationships. Joseph Pitman the Quaker, witnessed the will of Moses
Pitman on March 24, 1759. One Joseph Pitman made his will on
December 18, 1786, and another on October 9, 1762, but the lists of
legatees do not indicate that either was the father of the above
children.

Hugh Johnston
Rocky Mount Telegram
June 6, 1958

That Joseph Pitman (the one Mr Johnston refers to) never settled in lower Edgecombe County(my theory). He is last accounted for in Southampton, VA in 1751.
The references to the Lancasters in the below document are references to relatives of his mother.
There were two other Joseph Pitmans in lower Edgecombe who were Quakers… one died 1763… his son, also a Quaker,
died in 1787.

One of the Edgecombe Josephs also signed with a “J”:

1758       24 Nov. William Green of Edgecombe Co. to Joseph Pitman of same, for £3 a tract of 90 acres on the south bank of Tar River at the mouth of Deep Branch adjoining said Pitman. Wit: Joseph (J) Pitman, Jesse Green.

If I am going to be proved wrong this will be the deed… this seems to be the “son” witnessing the deed of the father… but the will of Joseph d.1787 is signed “x”.  [see footnote]

But to quote Mr. Johnston “but the lists of legatees do not indicate that either was the father of the above children” (the Southampton Joseph).  … a little help here?

Joseph d.1763 also went to the Rich Square MM but he was an “Elder” in 1760.  The Southampton Joseph b.1724 would be age 36… does that sound likely?

The only other Joseph Pitman in Edgecombe County of that age group was the son of Robert Pitman who was the brother of the Joseph Pitman

that flummoxed Mr. Johnston.  And just as an aside… I love reading his folksy articles and think he contributed mightily to genealogy.

Abstracts of Deeds Edgecombe Precinct, Edgecombe Co NC, As Found In Halifax Co, NC, Public Registry, Deed Books 1-6, 1732-1758, Hoffman, Margaret M

1750 10 Feb – Joseph Pitman bought 240 acres from John Gay on Tar River for 35 pounds joining a branch and Gary. wit. Moses Pitman, Joseph Pitman.

1756 14 May – Joseph Pitman, Sr. sold land to Joseph Pitman, Jr. 90 acres on Tar River, joining a branch, John Gay and the River. Wit. Moses Pitman, John Gay

DB 00, p.?  source needs verified

Edgecombe Co., NC, Court Minutes 1744-1762 Book I & II, GoldenWest Marketing Genealogy, Temple City, CA….. Minute Books III & IV, Haun

1763   Ann Pitman appointed Guardian to Ann, Jethro & Chloe Pitman, orphans of Joseph Pitman deceased.

Joseph Pitman Guardian of Thomas Pitman orphan of Joseph Pitman deceased.

by 1773 Chloe is the only child still under Guardianship… for that reason I estimate the birth of Thomas about 1752.  Ann & Jethro a bit earlier.

Joseph Pitman, Sr    b.unk d.1763, wife (sister of John Gay)

….. Joseph Jr  b. prior to 1736  (perhaps a prior mother?)

….. Ann  b. say 1749

…..  Jethro b. say 1751

….. Thomas b. say 1752

….. Chloe b. say 1753

(it is tempting to say Ann Gay was the wife of Joseph Pitman Sr, however see this deed of 1763 the same time an “Ann” assumed the Guardianship:

1763   22 Sep. ANN PITMAN, widow, of Edgecombe Co. to JACOB PITTMAN of same, for £12 lawful money of NC all of her right and title in a plantation on the south side of Tar River and on Buck Swamp, left to her for her lifetime by the will of her deceased husband, BENJAMIN PTTMAN. Wit: John Faulk, Aaron Baker. DB D, p. 95,)… her son Jacob witnessed the will of Joseph Sr and hence, there were obviously close ties and this Ann could plausibly be the guardian.)

Who the heck is this James Pitman?

Haun’s Edgecombe Cout Minutes, Book III

[327]-57   May 1785

The following are insolvents returned by the collector of Captain FLOWER’S district for 1784 which were allowd viz: Sherrod HORN, Jesse BOAZMAN, Isaac MELTON, James PITMAN, William JONES, Daniel HIGHSMITH , Benjamin ROGERS, all Pols & Danl. HIGHTOR? for 1 Poll & 460 acres.

With the pitiful lack of information we have for ANY James Pitman can this be our guy of the 1740s deeds?  If he was in his 20s in the 1740s this would tag him roughly 70ish yrs old in 1785.  I dunno.

I have him “apparently” selling all his holdings by 1746 and then he just disappears… could it be he was a tenant, sharecropper, living near relatives on the south side of Tar River?  The glaring problem is the 40 year gap…. but it is “plausible”.

More Indian Traders than you can wrap a deer skin around…

with one comment

Much ado is made of Virginia Indian Traders and of course the SC boys… but nary as much as a popcorn fart from historians concerning the NC traders… damn shame.

Noted folks who relocated from the Occoneechee Neck area of NC to SaxeGotha, SC.  Or, if you prefer, Halifax, NC area to Columbia, SC area.

Lets say the 1730s…

Philip Raiford (who originated in Isle of Wight) and his father  lived next door (literally) from George Anderson who was in IOW from 1695-1710.  Their property was located where modern Windsor, VA is.

Joseph Joyner (hailed from IOW very near the modern town of Franklin, VA)  This guy in SaxeGotha is either the father or son or both….  of particular interest is that James Millikin of Halifax, was his son-in-law.  From what I can tell Millikin was more “Merchant” than trader in the scheme of things.  Millikin did not move to SaxeGotha but he was in contact with Thomas Brown (the SC trader, not related to the Brownes of Occoneechee that I know of).  The two could actually write and pretty much spel.

This little tidbit is interesting because it may relate to some Sims of Occoneeche Neck who may also have been traders… I’m thinking of Robert and Joseph Sims. (you can find a Robert Sims on my IOW map… down in Nansemond County)   I would suspect this guy in SC is related but there is also another William Syms in SC who this article may be referring to…

December 31-January 7, 1736
Williamsburg Gazette

By a Letter from Col. James Millikin, in North-Carolina, dated at Roanoak, December the 10th, we have the following Account, That he received a Letter from Mr. Thomas Brown, of the Cutaboes, the chief Trader there, informing him. That on the 9th of October last, Three Indians came to the House of one William Syms, on Pine tree Creek, and (in his Absence) killed his Wife, another Woman, Three Children, and a Negro Man; and then set Fire to the House, Tis suppos’d they carried a White Girl away with them alive, who liv’d at the House, but can’t be found.

They were followed the next Morning by Five White Men, upon the Track, who found they had stopp’d in the Night, near a Place called Mars-Bluff, on Pedee River, where they had shared the Plunder, and left the bloody Cloaths of the murdered People. The Indians bent their Way Northward, which makes it believ’d they were Tuskaroroes. Mr. Brown wrote the above Account to Col. Millikin, at the Request of the Governor of South-Carolina, desiring him to use his Endeavours to apprehend these horrid Murderers

Richard Jackson was associated with the Joyners and others from NC.

Robert Long/Lang  had land deeds in both places.

Gideon Gibson married a daughter of William Browne (who lived near the modern prison farm near Caledonia).  Some hub bub on the web concerns if he was mullato or indian…  interesting guy… seems to have been something of a hell-raiser during the “Regulator” era… may have moved east of SaxeGotha to Mars Bluff/ Sandy Bluff area.

See my “blogroll” for some links to SaxeGotha.

Also SC has come online with some images of colonial deeds and plats.  Good stuff.

the “widow” Pitman

with 36 comments

A couple commenters disagree with my theory of Elizabeth Pitman.  That is primarily why I chose this “blog” format- it allows for a healthy back and forth discussion- “peer review” if you will.  I encourage it and respect your opinions.  With that being said…
Under the Page “that Pitman gal” my theory is that Elizabeth Pitman is not the blood daughter of Elizabeth Anderson but the daughter of Thomas Pitman…  “Good Lord you blithering idiot”, you may ask, “anyone in their right mind can see she was the legitimate daughter of Elizabeth Anderson and had a son out of wedlock”.  Hugh B. Johnston even spelled it out:
Children of James and Elizabeth Anderson:
1. James Anderson
2.  Carrolus Anderson
3.  Elizabeth Anderson married ___Pitman
I disagree with him. I’ve disagreed with J. B. Bodie and I’ve pretty much accused Grimes of “abstracting while under the influence”.  But I can take it as well as dish it out.  I also have a sense of humor.  Try transcribing some colonial documents with a “spell checker” active and see if you can keep from laughing.
But back to my ludicrous theory which I so doggedly defend…
A dozen years ago I ran across this quote:
From the research of Donald Gordon (a Pittman descendant):
Thomas Pitman,of Monmouthshire, England, fled England during the Cromwell rebellion and landed in Virginia in 1649. He purchased land in Surry County, Virginia and had two sons Thomas and William. This grandson, the third Thomas moved about 1707 to Isle of Wight County. His daughter Elizabeth and son Robert, with Robert’s two sons, Samuel and Joseph moved to Edgecombe County North Carolina about 1738. Deeds in Edgecombe County show Robert, Samuel, Joseph and Elizabeth holding several hundred acres in the area North and West of Tarboro. Joseph who first appears on Edgecombe records as a bailiff of the court had a son Abner (b. 1758) and grandson born 1787. By this time the Pitmans became Pittmans and all spelled their name with two tees . The Pittmans held land North of Leggett stretching into southern Halifax County. Here Joseph and his wife Mary had a son Henry Elias born 1828. In 1850 Henry married Lucy Anderson who in 1852 gave birth to Biscoe Pittman who married Martha Alice Walston. To this marriage was born, as the last of eight children, Hobson Lafayette Pittman (1899) at Epworth.
While I can nitpick the “Thomas Pitman,of Monmouthshire, England, fled England during the Cromwell rebellion and landed in Virginia in 1649” bit… the part I have in bold is right on the money.  His daughter Elizabeth and son Robert, with Robert’s two sons, Samuel and Joseph moved to Edgecombe County North Carolina about 1738.  Furthermore I have proved it in my Pages.  The proof for Joseph Pitman, son of Robert, may be one of the most mind-numbing excursions into genealogy that you don’t want to take- but it is there.  The proof for Samuel Pitman was child’s play:
Source:  Henry and Harriett Turner Higgs Pittman Family Bible Records, page 20    http://digital.ncdcr.gov/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/p15012coll1&CISOPTR=6082&REC=1
Robert Pitman is easily traced in Halifax.  Elizabeth Pitman not so much… but here she is in 1744:
So… I think Elizabeth Pitman had an illegitimate son William Anderson and may not have ever married.  Folks may have snickered when they called her “widow Pitman”.  I think the Pitman that got her land was her nephew.  Or I could be wrong…  But Donald Gordon was right.  And the son of Robert Pitman witnessed the will of William Anderson.

Elias Fort… there are 2 (cousins)… the son of George Fort settles near Carolus Anderson on Meherrin River and moves to Tar River around 1748.  The Halifax Elias was the son of John Fort.

Sarah McDaniel, widow of Daniel McDaniel, seems to have remarried John Anderson… maybe

Its Thankgiving morning and I’m starting a second pot of coffee plus I didn’t drink myself last night… just sayin’.

The evidence for my suspicion of the late Secretary of State can be found here:

To be fair to the late Secretary, the miscreant drinkers may be his assistants mentioned in his Foreword – Mssrs Sawyer & Sawyer or the obviously blind proofreader Mr Batchelor.

Daniel McDaniel and John Anderson revisited

Note*  I’ve revised much of this and added a Page…  see Sarah McDaniel

MCDANIELL, DANIEL

April 16, 1733. May 2, 1734. Sons: NICHOLAS, DANIEL, JAMES (negroes to each). Daughters: ANN and SARAH MCDANIEL. Wife and Executrix: SARAH. Witnesses: JOHN ANDERSON, ALEX. WIGHT, JOHN BRYAN. Original missing. Recorded in Book 1722-1735, page 295.

I found this Inventory for a Daniel McDaniel died 1741/2 in Edgecombe County (modern Halifax).

North Carolina

Edgecomb County

February 1741/2 To the worshipful Court Now Sitting This Being a true and perfect Inventory of all and Singular of the personall Estate of Daniel McDaniel Descd By me —–

Serah Anderson Exittrix *e —-

This appears to me to be the son of the 1734 Daniel and the daughter Sarah is Executor for her brother. This would also explain her name “Sarah Anderson” if she was the wife of John Anderson who witnessed the 1734 will. The only alternative would be that this is a delayed probate of the 1734 Will (seven or eight years seems unusually long a delay). Also how to explain her name change? I don’t know of another Anderson the widow could have married other than the John mentioned. Drat… another brick wall.

Another Inventory is for James McDaniel 1744/5 and is possibly another son of 1734 Daniel:

A True and Perfect Inventory of the Estate of James McDaniel taken into my Possession as Guardian appointed by this Worshipful Court Viz. One Negro Man, one cow & calf, 2 chairs 2 Spoons 1 Pewter Dish 1 Pewter Bason 1 Iron Potrack 1 Iron Square 1 Hammer pr. me Edward Brown. Febry 19th. 1744/5

(Source: North Carolina Probate Records, 1735-1970, Edgecombe Estates, 1730-1747 Image 66 of 92, Familysearch.org)

This Edward Brown is likely related to Sarah Brown the widow of 1734 Daniel McDaniel and why I suspect this is a son. Also, since Edward Brown is appointed “Guardian”, I suspect James McDaniel may have left children.

Another Inventory is for Arch.l McDaniel 1744:

An Accot. of Sales of the Goods & Chattles of Arch.l McDaniel Deced. for Danl McDan.l Adm.r and Sold by S. Holliman —

June ye 30th 1744 —

(a modest list of items totalling 4 pds, 16 shillings)

So what to make of all this?

Daniel McDaniel (the immigrant?) d. 1734

son Daniel d. 1741

son James d. 1744/5

son Nicholas (unknown)

dau Ann (unknown)

dau Sarah m. John Anderson?

or

Daniel McDaniel (the immigrant?) d. 1734

widow Sarah m. John Anderson

son James d. 1744/5 relatively young

son Daniel d. 1768

gson Daniel probates father’s will in 1768

To speculate further and since this is the first evidence I’ve discovered of a Sarah Anderson directly associated with Daniel McDaniel and John Anderson…

?What if? John Anderson was the son of James Anderson who first shows up in this area in 1716? (See under Pages to the right for more details on these folks)

Note this will of 1733…
