Andersons of Colonial N. Carolina

meant what they said, said what they meant

Two forks of a tree…

If I am correct with my present theory then my 20 year obsession with the illegitimate birth of a son to Elizabeth Anderson about 1725ish may pan out.  There are many assorted facts in all my “Pages” to support the theory.

My newfound friend, Ken Brantley, of the Brantley Association, ( and apparent cousin) has summed up what I have long suspected but was hesitant to acknowledge.

I quote him verbatim (and hope he won’t mind, which I am sure he will not):

“Marc; Late to be getting back with you, but:

As I recall, I believe  you and he [another ANDERSON whom I am communicating with]  matched through the autosomal DNA. That being the case, since you match [him, the other ANDERSON]  in the autosomal DNA (looks at pieces of all your DNA) and yet you do not match the Y-DNA; (father to son only connections), it means that you are related to him somewhere back there.  It tells me that you and he are of the same family and he is carrying the true Y-DNA of this Anderson family. While his is through father to son, your Anderson was through a girl.  The story about the Anderson girl fits this to the tee. The only way you got the Brantley Y-DNA was through an illegitimate birth by an Anderson girl, or an outright adoption, unknown to us.
I would try to determine his lineage, as it is yours too at some point if that is where we got his name..
That’s my opinion.”
So it appears that there may be a way to figure out the actual ANDERSON progenitor of CAROLUS ANDERSON (whom I am convinced, theory-wise, is the brother of the gal (Elizabeth Anderson, that my line stems from)  … WHEW!  Much to my dismay, Carolus Anderson left no male descendants.  But the DNA trail we are discussing leaves open the possibility that the other brother (James Anderson) left male descendants which are showing up.

  1. Marc, don’t you just love DNA? I am so glad it is providing more evidence for what you have suspected for a long time! 🙂

    • Hi Traci
Good to hear from you. It was primarily your prodding that coaxed me to the 67 step level. Several fascinating folks are adding tidbits of info. Also I am anxiously awaiting the results from a descendant of Micajah Anderson. If we match then that will pretty much nail down the whole kit-n- kaboodle lineage of the William Anderson d1789 line. Interesting stuff indeed.

  2. Mr. Anderson. My name is Chris Smith. I think we should talk about the Smiths, Merritts, and Andersons. Take a look at my site for the information I’ve already gathered. https://smithgenealogy.wordpress.com. I think our blogs could compliment each others well. Thanks.

      • I’m researching the Arthur Smith IV line. He was the husband to Arthur Allen’s widow. Am I barking up the right tree here?

      • I think I got here by researching Matthais Marriott? I think he is related to a Charles P. Merritt who is related to a Ephraim Merritt line…

  3. I’ve never “focused” on the Arthur Smith of Isle of Wight. However, if you use my search box he will pop up 54 hits. I was researching the Pitt line in IOW. Perhaps I have some notes you might find useful? Also I have some original maps worked up which detail his property and neighbors.

    • I do have some notes on Charles Merritt who wound up in Chowan County… I believe he was an early Indian Trader who somewhat assiciated with John Browne and Richard Booth… among others. An interesting man.
Again, a search for “merritt” may prove interesting to you.

I have some random notes on Mathias Marriott in Surry County…

If I am correct… his property was near Gray’s Creek in the upper NE section of this map…

  4. Hi there. I just discovered this blog and was hoping you could help me. I am the grandson of Eucon Smith who was the son of Rebecca Anderson. Rebecca was the daughter or Archibald Anderson. Rebecca died giving birth to my grandfather in 1912. She and Archibald are buried in a small family cemetery somewhere near Tarboro. I haven’t been there since I was a child and don’t remember how to get back. Are you familiar with it?

  5. Marc: I want to send you a copy of my book on my line of the Lewis family. I need a physical address. If you would like to receive my take on Anthony Lewis, I would like to send you the book. Bill Lewis
