Its just a white lie…
Elizabeth
Daughter of
George & Rachel Anderson
Born 1784
Died March 26, 1880
Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.

its just the George is George Griffis and not George Anderson.
Seems to be a bit of moral chicanery going on here…
My buddy David Gammon has been sleuthing around the Edgecombe Court Minutes lately and sniffed out this bit of inconvenient truth:
“George Griffis ordered to pay Rachel Anderson for begetting a base born child on her body. August Court 1797.”
One can only wonder nowadays why it would take Rachel Anderson 13 years to seek a court settlement?
And who the hell was George Griffis of Edgecombe?
I would think 1797 may be closer to the date of her actual birth than what the tombstone says. Usually bastardy charges were brought anywhere from the time the woman was found to be pregnant through 3-4 years after the birth (NC law set it at 3 years in 1814). The one other female in Rachel Andersons’ household on the 1800 census is under 10 years old; in 1810 the only other female is between 16-25 (b. 1785-1794). George Griffis is enumerated on the 1810 Edgecombe County census. More of a sin of omission than white lie but… yeah.

David Gammon has always been sceptical about this tombstone… much like you. I admit a raised eyebrow myself. But I shall persevere in my quest to defend the old girl. Go Tarheels!
Good Lord that was lame…

Ummm… course we cannot exclude the chance that this was not her first trip to the rodeo… if you catch my drift.
