Cicely… in about a page and a half

The problem with this account is that one is left with those areas “between the lines” that are not accounted for… this is a movie that has not been written yet..

The reason for this post is simply one of those moments when I sit back, have a sip of coffee (or adult beverage depending on the time of day), and realize what the hell I am doing with these three hundred year old maps… smiling

This is part of my Southside Virginia map… which is barely started and will never be finished…

I love the new Cicely Map!! Seriously how do you do this? I know processioning occurred annually for boundaries, BUT you have to have some place to start all this…a connecting of the dots so to speak. I do not believe there were any plat maps at the time since these were VERY early times. Is there a way I can download these awesome maps of yours? My interest is I have Thweatts in my line.

With kind Regards, Louisa Gay

In answer to the above comment … the map above is not online yet. It will be called Southside Virginia. All of the maps on this site are custom made by me. Years ago I realized that these early patents (which are easily found at the Library of Virginia) online, are extremely accurate. The problem was that early maps were NOT accurate. However…and this is the mystery: if you take a modern map (which I find online at USGS historic maps) and plat the old maps on the new USGS maps then, Voila!, you have what you see with my new/old maps.

There is a learning curve to master my technique… which would involve a seminar (perhaps) where I could teach a class my techniques. I am curious how many folks would be interested. There are considerable expenses and hoops to jump through to set up such a gig.

In the meantime, I will try out an idea… if any of you folks have a particular ancestor in the area of Southside Virginia (my specialty) then use my Buy Me a Coffee link (as payment for my research time) and email me a request. This is a trial run. 1 patent = 1 coffee ($5). I will email you a PDF document.

  1. Thank you for all of your work. I have shared it with three other helpful notable Wright researchers. I’m not a notable one, just plugging away. It has been helpful to visualize where my Y DNA Wright line was in comparison to their Wright lines in Surry, Isle of Wight, Brunswick, Southampton and Stony Creek, Lunenburg Co, VA and Edgecombe, NC. My 1736 John Wright line was close to 1728 William Rutter and his wife 1731 Mary Wright (1736 John’s sister) in IOW and the Island Pond, which you discussed. 1736 John and 1731 Mary were children of 1701 Thomas Wright of Surry and wife Elizabeth Williams. I still don’t know where the 1736 John Wright’s 500 acres on Deep Branch or Wright’s Marsh were located: 17th C IOW XXXI, Deed Bk 1, 1688-1704. 633. WRIGHT’S MARSH. Wm Smelley, John Smelly, Wm Murfrey, Roger Tarleton, Henry Plumpton. James Daughtie, Edward Bryan, Robt Horsning, Thos Giles. You have also pinpointed 2 Robert Wrights 1761 and 1762 lands in Edgecombe Co, NC off Town Creek and one of the Solomon Wright (previously in Lunenburg) grants on the borderline with Pitt Co., NC. I have tried to figure out how one of Solomon’s children came to be called 1830 Anderson Wright. An Anderson family connection or just admiration? Again, I send thanks for your work. If I understand the generous offer correctly, I will be sending you coffee to help with a 1784 Job Wright who owned land in Nottoway Parish in Southampton. Best wishes as always

  2. thanks for the kind words… Ella

Southampton is something of a specialty of mine now…

    Wright, Job. grantee.
    Creation Date
    1761 – 0214
    Location: Southampton County.
Description: 17 acres on the north side of Nottoway River and on Anthony’s Branch adjoining Joseph Vick, Albridgton Jones and extending.
    Source: Land Office Patents No. 33, 1756-1761 (v.1, 2, 3 & 4 p.1-1095), p. 1003 (Reel 31-32).

His tiny 17 acres will not show up on my map (smiling)… which is probably why I overlooked it…

I know exactly where this guy had property. The 1784 patent does not show up easily…please send any different spelling to help me find it…

    • Anthony Lewis, Anthony’s Delight. That is exactly the area! That was a mystery, now solved. Thank you! I could use help with this one for Job Wright. I am probably sending you more info than you need, but I have tried almost everything, including searching “85 acres” in VA in the time period on Family Search. I know, I know, you don’t have to say it. I am currently assuming that 1784 Job Wright is a son of 1745 Joseph Wright who married 1) Mary Applewhaite, widow of 1733 James Benn with 4 Benn orphans and 2) a Martha. Joseph Wright bought Lots 1 and 2 in Newport on 25 Oct 1736. I cannot directly connect Job to any family through land, marriage, wills or otherwise. In 1753 IOW court records he is 3 times listed as Jacob. Job Wright had a 1761 land grant for the 17 ac, as you note. He also had this: Brantley: 16 Oct 1758 SO DB 1 1749-1753 p 251 Im 133. Wm Pugh of Edgecombe Co NC to Job Wright SO for 10 pds 270 ac pat to Arnold Pugh redowning to son Wm date 13 Nov 1713. Wit David Wright John Lewis, Richd Beal Date. dated 14 Dec 1758.

FS 14 Dec 1758 SO. Job Wright Nottoway Parish to Joseph Vick 120 ac. Part of 220 (?) ac granted Arnold Pew 13 Nov 1713, sold by his son Wm Pew to Job Wright 1758. Feather Bed Br into Deep Branch, Benjamin Beal’s corner, Job Wright line, Jesse Joyner line to Joseph Vick, conveyed to Job Wright 16 Oct 1758. Wit Benj Simmons, Moses Joyner, James Jordan Scott.

I can follow some of this land through his sons 1791 James Wright married to Sarah and David Wright married to Mary Bracey, d/o of 1781 Francis Bracey and wife Ann Jordan. [James Wright m. Mary Bracey. Sister Elizabeth Bracey m. Abt. 1814 Benjamin Beal. Miriam Bracey m. 1816 Kinchen Edwards. Patience Bracey m. Jacob Johnson. Brother 1814 Francis Bracey m Mary 1800.] Brantley: 31 Jan 1784 SO DB 6 1782-1787 p265 266 267 David Wright and Sarah his wife and James Wright at desire of father Job Wright that youngest son James have tract of 170 ac formerly of John Rasbury 13 Nov 1713 and 17 ac of Job Wright 14 Feb 1761 where James lives. Sarah Wright release of dower. Brantley: 11 Jan 1791. SO DB 7 1787-1793 pp 455-456-457. James Wright and wife Mary of Nottoway Parish to Albrigton Jones 170 ac and 17 ac ancient rec and from David Wright son of Job Wright. Adj orphans of David Wright, Jesse Joyner, Wm Wiliams, Albrigton Jones line, Wm Jones. The John Rasberry tract (Patents, 1710-1719, VA Image 127/481) was granted on the same date as the Arnold Pew/Pugh grant, 13 Nov 1713. I have not found how Job Wright came about owning the 1749 John Rasberry 170 ac or if Arnold Pew bought it from Rasberry, who married Bridgett Brown, when Rasberry moved to Bertie Co, NC.

The land I am looking for, which I don’t know where located, is the earliest record I have of Job Wright, which is a peppercorn deed for 85 acres between Job and Dionysius Wright: Job Wright of IOW to Dionissus Wright of Brunswick Co, 85 ac adj. Capt. Albridgton, the Tanning Branch, the Feather Bed Br and the Pikefield B. Wit. George Washington, Wm. Fowler, Abraham Baggett. Rec 23 Sept 1745 IOW Deed bk 7, p.88, 1744-1747 HL Hopkins. and this follows: 8 July 1747 Dionysius Wright of Brunswick Co to Job Wright of Isle of Wight…85 ac on the east side of Nottoway Swamp adj Feather Bed Br, the Pike Field Br. Capt Abridton Jones & Tannery Br. Wit. Benj. Johnson Jr., John Collier, Ann Johnston. Hopkins. IOW Co Dd Bk 7, 1744-47 p. 483/108. I know this 85 ac is conveyed as 80 ac by Deed to Trust from James Wright to 1818 Miriam Scott widow of 1774 James Jordan Scott: D 9 Sept 1790. R 10 Feb 1791. The deed states that if repaid with interest, he can repossess the land. Indenture as a deed of trust. James Wright of Nottoway Parish, SO to Miriam Scott for 34 pds 3 sh 2 pence, plantation, land formerly of Job Wright in SO, 80 ac. Miriam Scott wills the debt from James Wright with interest to her grandson Joseph Pretlow.

If we can find where that 85 acres came from originally before Sept. 1745, we may possibly find the connection to the family of Job Wright.

  3. Check your email… I sent some stuff.

The Southampton records indicate a James Wright was conveyed the 17 acres from his father Job Wright. I have not followed further…
